Fertilising is non-negotiable for a healthy lawn. The one thing not to do is use animal manure. Even after long composting, the weed seeds in it don't fully die — and the moment you water the lawn after applying, they germinate. The result is a lawn fighting weeds for resources before it's even established. Use organic-based, slow-release fertilisers instead — both for the lawn's sake and to keep cost manageable. A single application of slow-release feed runs 2–3 months active, and the steady release builds out the root system, which is what gives turf its dense, carpet-like finish.
